Shenzhen – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenzhen

From the page: ” Shenzhen (IPA: [Ê,ÉÌntÊ,ÉÌ,n]) is a major city in the south of Southern China’s Guangdong Province, situated immediately north of Hong Kong. The area became China’s first—and arguably one of the most successful—Special Economic Zones. It currently also holds sub-provincial administrative status, with powers slightly less than a province.

Shenzhen’s novel and modern cityscape is the result of the vibrant economy made possible by rapid foreign investment since the institution of the policy of “reform and opening” establishment of the Special Economic Zone in the late 1970s. Before this, Shenzhen was a small village. Since the late seventies, both Chinese and foreign nationals have invested enormous sums in the economy of Shenzhen. More than US$30 billion in foreign investment has gone into both fully foreign owned and joint ventures, initially mainly in manufacturing but recently increasingly in service industries. Shenzhen is now reputedly one of the fastest growing cities in the world.[2] Being southern mainland China’s major financial centre, Shenzhen is home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange as well as the headquarters of numerous high-tech companies. Shenzhen is also the third busiest container port in China, ranking only after Shanghai and Hong Kong. “

Invisibility carpet cloak can hide objects from visible light

http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-06-invisibility-carpet-cloak-visible.html

From the page: ” In the current study, the researchers used a technique called quasi conformal mapping (QCM) to conceal an object with a height of 300 nm and a width of 6 Ã,µm underneath a reflective “carpet cloak.” The carpet itself has the appearance of a smooth optical mirror, so that the object and the bump that the object makes underneath the carpet are undetectable by visible light.

“The carpet cloak means that you conceal the object under a layer, which we call carpet, but you see the carpet like a normal mirror, as if it is flat with no bump caused by putting the object underneath,” Zhang told PhysOrg.com. “This way, the observer won’t recognize something is concealed underneath.”

In order to guide visible light around the concealed object, the researchers had to make light travel at different speeds while approaching the bump. They achieved this by designing the materials to have a variable refractive index, transforming them into metamaterials, since they don’t appear in nature. The researchers placed a silicon nitride waveguide on a transparent nanoporous silicon oxide substrate that they specially developed to have a much lower refractive index than that of the waveguide. Using nanofabrication techniques, the researchers etched tiny holes into the nitride to make a desired pattern, giving the waveguide the cloaking refractive index profile. “

GenevaLunch & Market researchers get new tool to track emotions (update)

http://genevalunch.com/blog/2011/06/08/market-researchers-get-new-tool-to-track-emotions-update/

From the page: ” The nViso product tracks over 143 different facial points to identify a range of features and relates them to models developed with facial databases, the company saysââ,¬”significantly, using only a standard webcam or similar video equipment:

  • “The technology is based on theoretical work by Dr Paul Ekman which demonstrates that universal emotions are precisely and sub-consciously revealed by minor changes in micro-expressions in the face. For instance, someone who is surprised commonly raises their eyebrows, opens their mouth and drops their lower jaw.”
  • “The search for ways to capture and analyze consumer emotions has been a research priority for years. Ventures into neuro-marketing have been difficult to integrate into existing research frameworks for broader use. Up until today, it has been difficult to link the measurement of emotions with analytics in a scalable way that can be put into a daily business practice.”
  • The company was one of 28 that received funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation in 2009 as part of its push to encourage innovation in the wake of the global economic downturn. The start-up has been collaborating with researchers at the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) to develop software that “deduces” which part of a computer screen a person is looking at; the NCCR presented its progress at the worldââ,¬s largest trade fair in Hannover in April 2011, with the tempting promise of combining this application with one that would measure emotions. ”

Chinese company eyes Boise | Boise, Garden City, Mountain Home | Idaho Statesman

    http://www.idahostatesman.com/2010/12/31/1472023/chinese-company-eyes-boise.html

From the page: ” A Chinese national company is interested in developing a 10,000- to 30,000-acre technology zone for industry, retail centers and homes south of the Boise Airport

Officials of the China National Machinery Industry Corp. have broached the idea -based on a concept popular in China today – to city and state leaders.

They are also interested in helping build and finance a fertilizer plant near American Falls, an idea company officials returned to Idaho this month to pursue.

This ambitious, long-term proposal would start with a manufacturing and warehouse zone tied to the airport, and could signify a shift in the economic relationship between the two superpowers ââ,‰â,¬Â a relationship once defined by U.S. companies like the J.R. Simplot Co., Hewlett-Packard and Morrison-Knudsen that would head to China to build and develop. “

Grace-Marie Turner: ObamaCare and the Future of Employer Health Insurance Coverage. – WSJ.com

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304432304576371252181401600.html

From the page: ” The employer incentives to alter or cease coverage under the health-reform law are strong. According to the study, at least 30% of employers would gain economically from dropping coverage, even if they completely compensated employees for the change through other benefit offerings or higher salaries. That’s because they no longer would be tethered to health-insurance costs that consistently rise faster than inflation.

Employers should think twice if they believe the fine for not offering coverage will stay unchanged at $2,000 per worker. “If many companies drop health insurance coverage, the government could increase the employer penalty or raise taxes,” according to the new study, authored by McKinsey consultants Shubham Singhal, Jeris Stueland and Drew Ungerman.

The case for repeal of ObamaCare grows stronger every year. The massive shift of health costs to taxpayers thanks to the disruption of employer-sponsored health insurance will add further to the burgeoning federal budget deficit. Congress can and must develop policies that allow the marketplace to evolve and not be forced into ObamaCare’s regulatory straitjacket. “
